Amazon As part of an expanded agreement to build AI infrastructure, Anthropic has agreed to invest up to $25 billion, in addition to the $8 billion that has poured into artificial intelligence startups in recent years.

In the announcement on Monday, Anthropic said it is committed to spending more than $100 billion over the next 10 years on Amazon Web Services technologies, including the current and future generations of Trenium, Amazon’s custom AI chips. Anthropic said it has secured up to 5 gigawatts of capacity for training and deploying its cloud AI models.

“Anthropic’s commitment to running its large language models on AWS Tranium for the next decade reflects the progress we’ve made on custom silicon as we continue to provide our customers with the technology and infrastructure they need to power generative AI,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement.

Amazon’s investment includes a $5 billion investment in Anthropic now, and up to $20 billion in the future tied to “certain commercial milestones,” according to a release. The initial investment puts Anthropic’s latest valuation at $380 billion.

Anthropic said in the release that it will bring a total of approximately 1 gigawatt of Tranium2 and Tranium3 capacity online by the end of the year.

All the major hyperscalers are competing to build AI capabilities as quickly as possible, with Amazon saying in February that it expected to spend about $200 billion on capital expenditures this year, mostly on AI infrastructure.

Amazon’s investment comes just two months after the e-commerce giant agreed to invest up to $50 billion in Anthropic’s main rival OpenAI. Both AI companies are racing to convince investors of their strong positions ahead of potential IPOs coming soon this year. OpenAI executives have been criticizing Anthropic in recent months for “the strategic mistake of not acquiring enough compute.”

Anthropic said Monday that enterprise and developer demand for the cloud, as well as “rapid growth” in consumer usage, has created “unavoidable stress” on its infrastructure, which has impacted its reliability and performance. The company said its new agreement with Amazon will rapidly expand its available capacity.

“Our users tell us that the cloud is essential to the way they work and we need to build the infrastructure to keep pace with rapidly growing demand,” Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, said in a statement. “Our collaboration with Amazon will allow us to advance AI research while bringing the cloud to our customers, including more than 100,000 buildings on AWS.”

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by a group of researchers and executives who separated from OpenAI. The company is best known for its family of cloud AI models and has had early success selling it to enterprises. Annual revenues have topped $30 billion.

Anthropic renamed it AWS primary cloud provider in 2023 and beyond primary training partner in 2024, but the company has also struck deals with competing providers Microsoft And Google.

In November, Microsoft agreed to invest $5 billion in Anthropic, and Anthropic said it was committed to buying $30 billion of Azure compute capacity. Earlier this month, Anthropic expanded its partnership with Google and broadcom For “multiple gigawatt” capacity.
