US President Donald Trump said on Monday he was keen to meet senior Iranian leaders as uncertainty grows over stalled peace talks and a ceasefire timeline.
Speaking to The Post, Trump said he was open to direct discussions despite Iran indicating it would boycott the latest round of talks.
He said, “I have no problem meeting them. If they want to meet and we have some very capable people, but I have no problem meeting them.”
The comments come as the US-Iran ceasefire is set to expire on Wednesday, raising fears that fighting could resume if no deal is reached.
Trump dismissed concerns that the talks could fail, saying: “We must negotiate. So I would assume no one is playing games at this point.”
He confirmed that a US delegation including Vice President JD Vance, envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner was traveling to Islamabad ahead of the planned discussions.
He said, “Get rid of their nuclear weapons. It’s all very simple. There will be no nuclear weapons.”
However, Trump declined to outline possible consequences if the talks failed: “Well, I don’t want to get into that with you. You can imagine. It’s not going to be pretty.”
