Hungary’s incoming Prime Minister Peter Magyar has suggested that Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu could be arrested if he visits the country, citing obligations under the International Criminal Court.

Speaking to journalists, Magyar said Hungary would need to take action if it remained part of the ICC system.

According to Reuters, he said, “If a country is a member of the International Criminal Court, and someone enters our territory under an arrest warrant, that person should be detained.”

Magyar also indicated that he intends to reverse Hungary’s recent removal from the ICC and re-integrate the country into the system.

He said he had already informed Netanyahu of the situation.

The comments signal a possible shift in policy from outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who had cultivated close ties with Netanyahu’s government and was pushing Hungary toward leaving the ICC.

Orban hosts Netanyahu in Budapest in 2025.

Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant are both subject to ICC arrest warrants issued in 2024 over alleged war crimes related to the conflict in Gaza. Both have denied the allegations.
