However, mastering this hairstyle can come in handy. This is a great updo for times when you’ve skipped washing your hair (again), or want a sleek and elegant look for day or night. So, how can we achieve the slicked-back bun of dreams? I have taken help from luke hershesonCelebrity hair stylist and founder of Hersheson (who also looks after the hair of Victoria Beckham, Sienna Miller and Iris Law, just to name a few of her celebrity clients), to share her top tips for creating a perfectly sleek bun at home. How to Make a Slicked-Back Bun
Before we begin, there are a few tools and products you’ll need to get a professional-looking finish. “For this look, I recommend a mixed bristle brush, a styling cream like Hersheyson’s Almost Everything Cream (£25), like a texture spray, Frenchie hair pins and a hairspray Got2b Glued Hairspray (£6),” says Hersheson.
“Second-day hair is ideal, especially if they’re already straight. The natural texture helps hold product and hold shape better than freshly washed hair,” he says, “so skip your shampoo, as a little oil will help keep hair in place.”

1. Hair Preparation
Start with dry hair. If your hair is slippery or freshly washed, you can spray some of it Texturizing spray to provide hair with some strength and hold. I am using Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray (£47) Through my length for extra hold.
2. Choose parting
Next, it’s time to choose your parting. “The parting completely changes the character of the genre,” says Hersheson. “No parting feels too androgynous and editorial, the side parting gives a slightly boyish, directional feel and the center parting feels softer,” he says. “The position of the bun also plays a role; lower buns feel more classic and polished, while higher ones look more raised and sporty.”
3. Section Hair
If you have long or thick lengths, it may be helpful to part your hair into two sections to help achieve a smooth finish and reduce frizz. Here, I divided my hair into a top section and a bottom section with my tail comb, the latter section of which I would then put back into a ponytail before repeating with the top section.
4. Apply Pomade
“Apply the cream liberally all the way down to the lengths and roots,” it says. Hersheson. This will help provide hold and allow you to achieve a smooth and shiny result.
5. Slick Back
“Brush hair backwards (or into your chosen part) using a mixed bristle brush, keeping tension steady to eliminate bumps,” says Hersheson. Look for boar bristle hair brushes that are tightly packed together, as this will help comb all the hair into a smooth finish. “Continue brushing until the hair is flat and close to the head,” he says. “Curly or frizzy hair requires more intensive brushing and product to make it look as flat and dense as possible,” he says.

Next, you can repeat the Sam process with the front section to add the ponytail, using a pomade and your brush to smooth the sections into place.

“Fold the ponytail and wrap it around the base into a bun and pin or secure the bun in place,” says Hersheson.
9. Smooth Flyways
If you have any short layers that don’t reach completely or stubborn flyaways, Hersheson There are some suggestions to fix them. “Smaller pieces require extra control,” he says. “Use more product and apply heat where necessary to set those sections in place so they don’t move or pop out.” I like to use a hair wax stick to provide more targeted control and promote a shiny finish.

As a final step, you can finish with hairspray for extra hold and shine.
