Fears that keep us from His presence
“Then all the people from the area of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to spare them, because they were dying because they were afraid. So he got into a boat and went away.” -Joshua 5:8
When Jesus was on earth he performed many miracles. One of those miracles involved the deliverance of a demon-possessed man. The people of the community witnessed this amazing display of God’s power when Jesus ordered the demon spirit to come out of the man and go into a nearby herd of pigs. The man was healed and sat at the feet of Jesus.
You would expect those who saw this to accept and respect Jesus as a man of good deeds. The opposite was true. Instead, they were overcome with fear. Why? Many of us respond to Jesus in the same way when he does something extraordinary among his people. We are scared because we have never personally experienced this before. Therefore, we take wrong decisions. The result was that Jesus distanced himself from us.
The Lord is able to do much more than we think. Jesus does not live in places where his well-being is feared. It is often subconscious fears that prevent us from going with Him on a deeper level. The Gerasenes could not benefit from Jesus’ presence because of their fear.
Have you feared Jesus because of what He wants from you? Are you afraid that he might ask you for something that you are not willing to give? Don’t let your fear keep him from your presence. His motive is always love for his children. You can trust him.
