(Qualified News) – Former Israeli prime ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid announced Sunday that they will merge their political factions into a unified list ahead of the upcoming Knesset elections, signaling a major realignment within Israel’s center-right political landscape.
According to a joint statement, the merger between Lapid’s Yesh Atid party and Bennett’s newly formed political movement is being prepared as “the first step in the process of healing the State of Israel”, with Bennett set to lead the unified party. The move is aimed at strengthening what he describes as the “reform faction” and eliminating internal divisions ahead of a high-risk election cycle.
This announcement comes amid changing political dynamics. A recent poll indicates that the Bennett-led party could match the strength of the ruling Likud party led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Meanwhile, Yesh Atid has seen a steep decline in its projected mandate compared to its strong showing in the 2022 elections.
Bennett is also reportedly in discussions with other political figures, including former IDF chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot, as part of broader efforts to expand the alliance. His campaign has emphasized unity, governance reform, and practical policies aimed at improving the daily lives of Israeli citizens, although his positions on more divisive long-term issues are less defined.
The former prime minister, who previously led a diverse coalition government with Lapid under a rotation agreement, has re-entered politics after a brief hiatus. In recent comments, Bennett expressed confidence in his ability to unite a fractured nation after years of political instability and regional conflict.
As Israel prepares for elections in October, the newly announced coalition is set to reshape the political battlefield, potentially posing a direct challenge to Netanyahu’s longtime leadership.
