Another fashion month has come and gone, so now that the fall/winter 2026 shows are officially behind us, Real Work started. As a fashion editor, now is the time for me to sit down and really dive deep into the collections. I’m examining each look, zooming in on every detail, and scanning the season extensively to make sure I can take it all in and properly analyze what there is to know about next season’s fashion. As of right now, this is the handbag I have my eye on.
While clothes may garner the most buzz immediately after a runway show, handbags and accessories will ultimately drive the bulk of sales – and therefore, influence style the most. Designers were aligned on multiple fronts with the sizes and shapes of handbags gracing their runways, and several fall bag trends are becoming evident. First, that things are becoming looser, more lively and overall less fussy. The bags come without zips and without buckles for a seamless effect and in more everyday shapes like classic flap bags and hobo bags, indicating a growing desire for designer bags to not only look good but also function. For you (and not vice versa).

The biggest takeaway for handbags this fall is that they don’t need to be fussy. While there’s a time and a place for a perfectly polished carryall, the style du jour is proving that the more lived-in your bag looks, the better. On the runway, he was looking for shapes that allowed for more bending and ease, with many models holding bags that were half-zippered or otherwise hanging completely open. There was something undeniably cool about it, like the energy of Jane Birkin carrying her eponymous Hermès bag with abandon.

Clutch is no longer an occasion wear but has now become a part of our everyday lifestyle just like any tote bag. Thus, designers reimagined everyday clutches that should be styled for both day and night, with an emphasis on larger sizes and polished frames and keylock closures.

The it bag of 2026 is undoubtedly the bowler bag. Double-strap satchels are absolutely everywhere right now, and all signs point to them only gaining momentum in the fall. On the runways at Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta and elsewhere, this silhouette was the hero model and the large, trapezoidal shape makes them look like modern doctor bags.

Exotic finishes have been a trending theme for quite some time now, and the fall collections emphasize how far a little croc embossing can go. Bags of all shapes and sizes—from bamboo-handle styles at Gucci to soft flap bags at Chanel and long clutches at Khaite—seems to agree: The best bags for fall will be those with bright crocodile prints.

Chanel first introduced its signature flap bag, the 2.55, in 1995, and this bag has barely strayed a millimeter from its place at the center of the Chanel universe. For Fall 2026, Creative Director Matthew Blazey collaborated with several other designers to reimagine the flap bag for the modern age with a larger size and softer silhouette, but all the beauty and practicality of the original.

One could call it the early 2000s—hobo bags are very old school. With the re-release of Y2K icons like the Saint Laurent Mombasa bag, slouchy curved totes are poised for a major moment in 2026. On deck are styles from Chanel to Hermès that give the retro shoulder bag a new take.

There were many details that made the fall collection remarkable, and if you weren’t paying close attention, you might have missed some of them, like the charming little minaudière suite that dotted the runways of Dior, Chanel, and Chloé. These beautiful clutches may be more artistic than functional, but they’re also a cheeky way for designers to underline the themes of their collections, like the frog-shaped style at Dior that matches viral lily-pad heels.
