Appeals Court Judge Chris Taylor has won the race for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, according to estimates by the Associated Press.
The results, part of the latest WI election results, were announced at 8:36 p.m., with Taylor leading her opponent Maria Lazar, 60.5 percent to 39.5 percent.
Although the contest is officially non-partisan, Taylor was supported by liberal groups, while Lazar was supported by conservative colleagues.
Taylor’s victory changed the balance of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, giving liberals a 5–2 majority on the bench.
The race attracted attention because of its potential impact on major legal decisions in the state.
Both candidates participated in a debate last week, although it was delayed after Taylor was diagnosed with kidney stones.
Due to severe weather conditions the program was postponed for an additional hour.
Taylor’s victory marks a significant moment in the state’s judicial landscape, as the court’s ideological balance shifts more strongly toward liberal influence.
