Gen Z says is a bi-monthly column that details the latest trends in the fashion and beauty sphere through the lens of Who What Wear. Gen Z Editor. Expect a download straight from the trendsetting generation of tastemakers, emerging designers and the upcoming class of shopping and styling options.

I didn’t expect to personally suffer from sunglasses this year, but here we are.

After the season of Slender ovals and classic aviators are dominating the conversation, a notable shift taking place in eyewear for 2026. Oversized, bug-eyed sunglasses – whether rounded or presented in a sleek, wraparound shield shape – are fast becoming the defining accessory of the moment. If we were to pinpoint the origins of this early-stage trend, one defined group is leading the charge: Gen Z.

Rooted in early 2000s style, this look exudes a familiar sense of nostalgia, but its current appeal goes beyond a simple throwback — beyond paparazzi shots of celebrities like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears stepping out of their cars with juicy couture tracksuits and frames so big they practically scream “Don’t judge me.” Gen Z is using bug-eyed glasses as an accessory that’s practically noticeable.

This effect has already made its mark on the Spring Summer 2026 runways. At Saint Laurent, strong tailoring was paired with oversized lenses, adding a sense of drama and polish. Celine embraced the trend with graphic, rounded frames that contrasted with clean, minimalist dresses. At Miu Miu, gradient-style sunglasses brought a sportier, more playful energy, reinforcing the brand’s ongoing focus on proportions and youthful style. In each collection, the message was the same: bug-eyed eyewear is no longer the final touch—it’s the center of the look. 2025 with a micro-oval frame, and 2026 with an insect-like look.

On a practical level, they also fit seamlessly into everyday attire. Large size frames attach easily Comfy denim and basics as they do with cargo mini-skirts or Spring 2026 micro-trend pieces. The result is an accessory that can be customized while still making a clear statement.

Ultimately, the resurgence of bug-eyed sunglasses signals a broader move away from subtlety and toward individuality. For Gen Z, especially, the allure lies in their ability to change looks with minimal effort.
