I fully support people wearing what they feel comfortable with, but I have to say that seeing very bare sandals (like flip-flops, sorry!) on city streets makes me a little nervous. It’s extremely rare that I wear sandals at all when visiting NYC, especially after hearing a friend’s story about once having a rat run over her foot while waiting for the subway. But alas, I’m not here to try to scare you away from wearing sandals in the city, but I am forenoon Here to point out that there is an alternative, a major flat-shoe trend of 2026 that looks just as good and seasonally appropriate as sandals with a dress or skirt, and Katie Holmes has proven it. That trend is glove flats.
As a stylish resident of NYC who walks a lot, Holmes is a constant example of what to wear in a way that’s both functional and attractive for the city. The outfit she chose for a recent outing was exactly the same. Holmes wore a lace-trimmed silk robe DÔEN dress (in the prettiest shade of blue), and instead of just wearing a pair of sandals and heading out the door, she wore a red button-down shirt and flats with the aforementioned gloves. Soft leather ballet flats have a minimalist look that subtly complements everything you pair them with, and they’re comfortable enough to walk down many blocks (yes, even sidewalks). They also add a cool-girl IYKYK look to an outfit compared to a simple pair of sandals. Needless to say, if you don’t yet have a pair of glove flats to wear with skirts and dresses (and everything else, of course), keep scrolling to pick out your pair and check out Holmes’ effortlessly chic spring dress outfit.
