It’s been a few weeks since the first renders of the Xperia 1 VIII were revealed. Those renders revealed a surprisingly different design for the Sony flagship, leading some to believe it might just be an April Fool’s joke. However, new renders based on factory CAD data have surfaced, and it looks like those older renders weren’t too far off.

With the help of Tipster onleaks, my mobile has shared CAD renders of the Xperia 1 VIII. These renders support the idea that Sony is ditching the vertical rear camera layout for a square-shaped camera island. Apart from the images, this leak also offers some new details.
According to the report, the dimensions of the Xperia 1 VIII are 161.9mm x 74.4mm x 8.58mm. For comparison, the VII measures 162 mm x 74 mm x 8.2 mm. This means that the new Xperia 1 will be slightly wider, thicker and shorter than its predecessor. Meanwhile, the display size will remain the same at 6.5 inches.
What has been the subject of controversy since the first renders surfaced is the front camera and bezels. In previous versions of the Xperia 1, the front camera was hidden in the thick top bezel of the phone. Some renders of the Xperia 1 VIII show a bezel-less handset and a camera hole cutout. However, these CAD renders show that the bezels are actually at the back and there is no cutout.
One final interesting detail concerns the redesigned camera bump. The island is 2.79 mm high, bringing the overall thickness of the phone to 11.37 mm. The previous model had a 1.1 mm tall camera bump, bringing its overall thickness to approximately 9.3 mm.
At the moment, there is no information on when Sony will launch the Xperia 1 VIII. However, Sony announced the VII in mid-May last year. Availability opened about a month later.
