On Monday, regional officials unveiled an Iranian proposal to end its sanctions blockade of the Strait of Hormuz without addressing its nuclear program.
The diplomatic overture coincides with the Iranian Foreign Minister’s visit to Russia, which he described as a strategic opportunity to discuss the ongoing conflict with Moscow.
According to sources close to the matter, if Iran is willing to open the Strait of Hormuz, the country also wants the US to end the blockade of Iranian ports as part of its proposal.
As reported axiosIran sent a proposal to the United States asking Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while sidelining talks on its nuclear program to a later stage.
But, this proposal is likely to be rejected by President Trump who wants to end Iran’s nuclear program and suspend uranium enrichment as a part of the agreement to end the blockade of Hormuz and make the ceasefire permanent.
“We hold all the cards. If they want to talk, they can come to us, or they can call us,” Trump told Fox News Channel.
Trump will hold a Situation Room meeting on Iran with his top national security and foreign policy team on Monday, according to US officials. The focus of the discussion will be the deadlock in the talks and the next steps.
In an interview with Fox News Trump indicated his intention to continue the blockade of the ports.
“When you have massive amounts of oil flowing into the system…if for some reason the line shuts down because you can’t put it into containers or into ships…what happens is the line bursts from the inside…they say they only have three days before that happens,” Trump said.
