Donald Trump and Melania Trump shocked royal fans as they broke major royal protocol when greeting King Charles and Queen Camilla.
According to reports, the couple did not bow their heads while greeting the Emperor and Queen Consort at the White House.
Instead the leaders shook hands and posed for photos, a move that drew mixed reactions online, with some questioning the apparent break from tradition.
Royal fans expressed their feelings on social media, writing: “Oh my god…he’s walking in front of the King like Charles doesn’t exist or don’t matter!”
Another said, “Trump did not bow to King Charles. Protocol broken. The answer is clearly written: Who walks forward, inspects the guard and takes the place of honor? It’s the king,” per mirror.
Although royal etiquette does not strictly require bowing or cursing, official guidance states that such gestures are optional.
“There is no mandatory code of conduct when meeting a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to follow traditional forms,” the royal family’s official site reads.
“For men this is a bow of the neck (with the head only) while women do a short curtsy. Others prefer a normal handshake.”
