Canvas experienced a massive outage on Thursday, with thousands of users complaining of problems accessing the online learning platform.
More than 2,700 users had reported problems as of 1:23 a.m. PT, according to outage tracking website DownDetector. Most of the complaints were related to problems accessing the website.
The platform’s official status page initially stated that staff were “investigating an issue” affecting student e-portfolios.
Later in the afternoon, the company posted another update confirming widespread disruptions to its services.
The status page states, “Canvas, Canvas Beta, and Canvas Test are currently unavailable.”
Reports of problems continued to increase throughout the day, with over 15,000 users eventually flagging problems on Downdetector.
Canvas is widely used by schools, colleges, and universities for coursework, assignments, grading, and communication between students and teachers.
The cause of the outage was not immediately known, and no timeline was provided for full restoration of services at the time of reporting.
