A new proposal aimed at deescalating tensions between the United States and Iran led to a tense phone call between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday.
According to sources cited in the Axios report, Trump told Netanyahu that mediators were drafting a “letter of intent” that could formally end the conflict and begin a 30-day negotiating period focused on Iran’s nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz.
Regional mediators including Qatar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt are working to refine the peace proposal aimed at bridging the gap between Washington and Tehran.
The discussions reportedly highlighted disagreements between the two leaders over how to deal with Iran.
A source cited by the outlet claimed that Netanyahu’s “hair was on fire after the call.”
Trump has continued to publicly express optimism about reaching a deal with Iran, while warning that military action is possible if talks fail.
“The only question is do we go and end it or will they sign a document. Let’s see what happens,” Trump said Wednesday.
Iran confirmed it was reviewing an updated proposal, although officials did not indicate any major changes in the position.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said talks would continue “on the basis of Iran’s 14-point proposal”.
