What’s the Best That Could Happen?MEGHAN RYAN ASBURY

    Lee en español

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV)

For weeks, there was a consistent glow from my phone screen shining in the middle of the night. We welcomed our first baby at the beginning of this year, and I found myself frantically running to ChatGPT with every little concern or question. Fueled by anxiety (and probably postpartum hormones), I looked for instant answers as I feared worst-case scenarios

Whether you’re a new mom or not, it’s easy to live afraid and try to find ways to avoid our fears coming true. In our modern age, we might find ourselves turning to quick internet searches for solutions and relief rather than turning to the God of all wisdom. Especially when our prayers have been met with silence instead of answers

I’ll confess, even though I believe God keeps all His promises, sometimes I struggle with verses like Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” I’ve witnessed too many circumstances where people who love Him have suffered from things I would never call “good.” Like walking with yet another friend through miscarriage or finding out another family is in a medical crisis. In those situations, it doesn’t seem like God is working all things out.

So how do we cling to God’s promise when we experience what seems like the opposite?

As believers, we have the greatest gift of all: hope. Because Christ died and rose again, we don’t have to live wondering, What’s the worst that could happen? In the midst of a broken world, we can confidently know that no matter what we have faced or will face, God really is working all things for good. This is true both right now and for eternity

As I’ve navigated the early days of motherhood, my fears have not gone away. But when they arise, I ask a new question: What’s the best that could happen? Not because I’m avoiding what’s hard or confusing but because it’s an act of faith to believe God really has gone before me, and He is with me. No matter what happens, I can trust in Him because He has kept every promise He’s made

Friend, what if we took God at His word and reminded ourselves He’s working all things out for good? What if we dared to live from a posture of faith and a heart that believes the best is yet to come — because it is (2 Corinthians 4:17)? God has given us the gift of hope beyond whatever we fear. Together, let’s cling to the fact that He keeps all of His promises

God, I struggle sometimes to run to You first when I’m uncertain and afraid. Forgive me for all the ways I let my fears impact my trust and faith in You. Remind me that my hope is in You alone. I can confidently believe You’re working all things out for my good. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
