The Bíborfehér (“Purple-White”) created by Kézműves Confectionery in Gyula has been named Hungary’s Cake of the Year, while the Szilvafácska (“Little Plum Tree”) dessert from Promenád Café in Balatongyörök won the title of Sugar-Free Cake of the Year. The Pilisi Pityókás (“Potato Bread from Pilis”) was named this year’s St. Stephen’s Day Bread
The Pilisi Pityókás bread by HEL Pékség Kft. won this year’s St. Stephen’s Day Bread category. In the innovative bread category, first place went to the Magvető (“Sower”), a long-fermented sourdough bread made by Sütőmix Kft. – Kossuth 1 Bakery. The Pedró Bakery’s Citrom virág (“Lemon Flower”) was named the On-the-Go Pastry of the Year
Twenty-six bakeries entered the competition this year with 80 breads
The Pilisi Pityókás is made with potatoes and traditional sourdough, and its name refers to the traditional Hungarian word for potato as well as the Pilis region
The Citrom virág is made with laminated pastry fermented for 16 hours and homemade lemon cream
A record 60 entries were submitted for Hungary’s Cake of the Year competition
This year, cakes had to contain Hungarian curd cheese (rögös túró), and sour cream as mandatory ingredients
The increased number of entries required a four-round judging process
The winning Bíborfehér cake was created by master pastry chefs László Balogh, Roland Kis and Zoltán Balogh. It combines forest berries, toasted almonds, sour-cream mousse and Hungarian curd cheese. The winning pastry chefs also took the title last year with their DCJ stílusgyakorlat cake, successfully defending their crown this year with Bíborfehér
