John Garrett, longtime broadcaster for the Vancouver Canucks, has died at the age of 74.
Garrett became a familiar voice to fans through his work as a commentator, known for his humor and sharp insights.
He spent more than two decades covering Canucks games and built a strong on-air partnership with colleagues including John Shorthouse and Dan Murphy.
His broadcasting career began in Canada in 1986 with Hockey Night before moving to Sportsnet, where he became a regular commentator for Vancouver games.
Garrett retired at the end of the 2022 to 2023 season. At the time, Canucks president Jim Rutherford said: “We want to thank John for two decades of entertainment and engagement with Canucks fans on regional TV.”
“Cheech has been a great ambassador for the hockey club, whether it’s in the goal as a player or in the broadcast booth as an announcer. His quick wit, sense of humor and an innate ability to intuitively understand the ins and outs of the game have made him a huge fan favorite. We wish him nothing but the best in the future”, he said.
Prior to broadcasting, Garrett played in the NHL as a goaltender, including three seasons with Vancouver.
