Former Apple design chief Jony Ive famously prioritized sleek aesthetics over almost everything, and there was widespread agreement that he sometimes took it a little too far.
However, his long-term vision of the future of the iPhone as a single slab of glass has persisted beyond his tenure, and a new post appears to offer an inspiring view of what we can expect from the 20th anniversary iPhone next year…
The phrase ‘single slab of glass’ clearly conveys the meaning of what the company is trying to achieve rather than the reality. There will always be bezels of some sort, even if the display partially wraps around the edges of the device. There will always be a need for cameras, speakers, microphones and sensors. Although some of these may eventually be embedded beneath the display, there will always be metal as well as glass.
However, it has long been believed that Apple will do its best to get as close to this vision as possible by the iPhone’s 20th anniversary in 2027.

This isn’t a traditional quad curved display, nor is it anything like the curved screen solutions we’ve seen on Android phones for years. The curvature itself can be extremely subtle.
What actually produces the visual effect may be a sophisticated combination of optical refraction, light guiding structures, and carefully engineered optical illusions. The end result could be a display where the bezel almost disappears from sight, while the edge view remains natural and unobstructed.
In other words, Apple will make every effort to make the bezels appear as unobtrusive as possible, but that will depend significantly on creating a perception that is more impressive than the engineering reality.
The post claims that Apple may brand it as a liquid glass display, and includes an image representative of the anticipated look.
I feel like this describes the realistic possibility of something that would look impressive enough to justify the fuss of 20th anniversary iPhone branding, while still being practical to manufacture using existing production techniques.
Relying on clever design to create a visual impression beyond the physical appearance is something we’ve seen since the first Apple Watch. The way the display’s black background blends with the shiny glass bezel gives the illusion that there is much less bezel than it actually is.
