Straight Talk’s already mixed customer service could get worse

    Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

    TL;DR

    • According to several Redditors, Walmart is phasing out the use of Straight Talk reps in stores.
    • Moving forward this means the best sales and promotions will only be available through Straight Talk’s website.
    • You’ll still be able to activate the Straight Talk device, but using third-party partners, which means less support and the possibility of fewer deals.

Straight Talk used to be one of my top prepaid recommendations, but a lot has changed in the last decade, especially since it was acquired by Verizon. Although it occasionally has some solid phone promotions and its monthly rates aren’t too bad, the prepaid sector is becoming increasingly crowded out by brands like Visible and US Mobile. Straight Talk’s service isn’t necessarily bad, but its competitors are making more efforts to stand out in terms of pricing, special features, and marketing.

The only benefit to Straight Talk is that, until now, you could get limited sales and customer support in select Walmart locations. The truth is that profits have declined significantly over the past few years, and it looks like it’s about to get worse. As first reported a redditor On the Straight Talk subreddit, it looks like the retail giant will no longer host Straight Talk representatives at any of its stores.

While Walmart contracts mostly with companies such as OST and Premium Retail Services for phone activation across the many brands offered in its stores, Straight Talk representatives were once a common sight in most major Walmart locations. These days, Straight Talk representatives have limited hours and availability at select Walmart stores, and many Walmarts have begun training employees on Straight Talk activation.

As Walmart moves away from Straight Talk representatives, that means many of Straight Talk’s best promotions and offers will be found online. Similarly, you will no longer receive any kind of customer support. Although it was already lagging, I know elderly family members who have used Straight Talk reps in the past to help with minor phone issues at little or no cost. Basically you can hope that it will go away completely, at least if the reports prove to be accurate.

Honestly, I used to love Straight Talk and am sad to see the brand lose momentum and focus. Hopefully these changes will allow Straight Talk to at least cut costs which will positively impact its marketing and services, but only time will tell.
