    What you need to know

    • A report claims that Samsung is looking to create a new Galaxy Book series, which could include laptops targeting the “low, mid and flagship” markets.
    • It was said that these laptops will also ditch ChromeOS in favor of Google’s new AluminumOS, which is based on Android.
    • Early rumors of AluminumOS surfaced earlier this year, showing how heavily it plays a role in Android’s UI and Gemini.

Samsung laptops have long run software straight from Google’s Kitchen (ChromeOS), but that’s likely changing for a future release.

a report of sammobile The publication says it has “exclusively learned” that Samsung is moving toward creating a brand new line of “Android-based” Galaxy Books. It adds that each of these laptops could hit “low, mid-range and flagship” markets when they first launch. Considering the heavy focus on Android in this report, SamMobile says Samsung will abandon ChromeOS in favor of Google’s AluminumOS in the future.

but people android police The report comes amid speculation that Samsung will be reaching out to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processor or its in-house brand (Exynos) for the heavy-lifting. Furthermore, the report claims that Samsung will use Android 17 as its software base under the AlminumOS umbrella. Additionally, consumers can see One UI 9 as an overall skin over Android 17, which means we could see loads of features and tools familiar from Galaxy phones and tablets.

It’s been a few weeks Google posted its session list for I/O 2026, but it contains a teaser about its software. The event is scheduled to begin on May 19 at 1pm ET/10am PT. This is when we’ll see the final keynote speech, which will definitely bring some interesting insights about the company’s plans going forward. Later that day, Google will hold several mini-events (or sessions) about its AI, Android 17, and Chrome.

    Android Central’s Tech

I was wondering what else might be happening at I/O 2026, besides the Gemini and XR things. Maybe this is the point. Those alleged early AluminumOS UI leaks really give off a new era feel. It’s fresh, it’s Android. I think it looks good, and it’s clear that Google is trying to do more with its desktop/laptop experience. I mean, let’s be real, it’s competing against Apple’s MacBook.

It’s the next day, May 20, when the company will work on Android, ChromeOS, XR, and more. While these are usually geared toward developers or people who really want to go deep, the keynote on May 19th is where we can see the big, consumer-facing highlights. If Samsung and Google want to discuss future Galaxy Books, it could happen there or after.

AluminumOS was first discussed late last year when a job listing confirmed its existence. While this is likely its codename, it seems Google is integrating Gemini into this new OS, potentially hinting at a richer redesign over ChromeOS. A reported first look in January actually made this ChromeOS replacement seem possible. AluminumOS appears to merge the desktop mode aesthetics of ChromeOS and Android 16 with split-screen and other Android-style UI changes.
