Before Michael’s release, critics criticized the biopic for not covering a crucial phase of the pop icon’s career: the shocking abuse allegations.
However, director Spike Lee, who saw the film twice, is hitting back at the criticism.
In his view, which he aired in an interview with CNN, there is no point in being angry because the film depicts events from Jackson’s life in 1988. Explosive allegations came to light in 1993.

Lee called out critics, saying, “The thing you’re talking about, the allegations, happens (later).”
“So you’re criticizing the movie all you want, but it doesn’t work in the timeline of the movie. But people showed up. All over the world, people showed their love,” he concluded.

Originally, Michael’s producers shot the biopic, which covered the fallout from Jackson’s earlier abuse allegations by Jordan Chandler.
However, as Variety reports, a prior settlement with the accuser led the filmmakers to scrap the story to focus on the pop singer’s troubled relationship with his father.
