The Met Gala 2026 may have come and gone, but the night’s incredible looks are still living in my mind, rent-free (along with the rest of our Who What Wear editors, who recapped the night on our live blog.) While there was no shortage of drama this year, I found myself lingering on ballerina and icon Misty Copeland long after the night was over — not because her glamor was the loudest, but because it was the most Was supposed to.

At first glance, this seems intuitive. But the more I looked, the more it revealed itself to be something far more deliberate – with meaning, restraint, and a very specific point of view.

“The inspiration really comes from a love of movement, art, history and lineage,” Copeland shared exclusively with Who What Wear ahead of the evening. he and celebrity makeup artist mali boykin Collaborated on a full Merit beauty look with an emphasis on movement and shine. There is nothing static about glamour; There’s a kind of fluidity to it, like it can change depending on the light, the angle, the moment. She added, “I wanted something you could feel, not just see,” and that’s really the way it goes.

There’s also a sense of ease that underpins the entire look. Copeland explained, “For me, feeling like yourself is about spontaneity and honesty… when nothing feels forced.” That philosophy encompasses every element of glam. It doesn’t try to replace her – it refines, enhances, and lets her appearance do the rest.

boykin Viewed the look through a similarly thoughtful lens, centering its concept on “beauty as art”—specifically, exploring gray as a full spectrum. “Brown as luxury. Brown as softness. Brown as strength,” she explained. It’s a subtle but impactful reframing, and on Copland, it sounds both modern and deeply resonant.

Color is where that idea most clearly comes to life. It’s shiny, but not in an obvious way – as the light catches the bronze, it changes as it moves. Boykin describes wanting to make the skin feel “bright, sculpted and alive”, which translates to a finish that’s dimensional rather than dewy for the sake of dewiness. You see heat, depth and light all working together.

The important thing is that nothing dominates. “My goal was never to overpower her,” Boykin said, referring to Copeland’s natural grace and presence. “I wanted the beauty to feel like who she is while still making a statement.” That balance – between visibility and restraint – is what makes the look so attractive.
