Luke 23:13-25

¹³ Pilate gathered the chief priests, rulers, and people. ¹⁴ And he said to them, You have brought this man to me considering him to be misleading the people. Look, I have examined it before you. I have not found any basis for the allegations you make on this. ¹⁵ Neither did Herod, because he sent him back to us. ⁽¹⁾ Look, he hasn’t done anything that deserves death. ¹⁶ So I will flog him and let him go.”

Barabbas or Jesus?

¹⁷ Pilate needed to release a prisoner for them at the festival. ^{(2) 18} But they all shouted with one voice, “Take him away! Leave Barabbas for us!” ¹⁹ Barabbas was thrown into prison for rebellion and murder in the city.

²⁰ Pilate addressed them again, because he wanted to release Jesus. ²¹ But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

²² He said to them the third time, “Why? What evil has he done? I find no grounds for sentencing him to death. So I will flog him and release him.” ²³ But they kept pressing him loudly, demanding that he be crucified. and their voices ⁽³⁾ Were tremendous. ²⁴ Therefore Pilate decided that what they asked would be fulfilled. ²⁵ He released the one they asked for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder, but he handed Jesus over according to their wish.
