⁴⁴ Now it was about six o’clock, ⁽¹⁾ And there was darkness over the whole country until the ninth hour, ^{(2) 45} While the sun became dark. Then the curtain of the temple burst into two pieces. ⁴⁶ Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” ⁽³⁾ When he said this he breathed his last.

⁴⁷ When the centurion saw what had happened, he began to praise God, saying, “This man was truly righteous.” ⁴⁸ When all the people who had gathered to watch the scene saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts. ⁴⁹ All those who knew Jesus, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, were standing at a distance and watching these things.

⁵⁰ In the Jewish city of Arimathea there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, a good and righteous man. ⁵¹ He did not agree with their plans and actions. He was hoping for the kingdom of God. ⁵² This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ⁵³ He took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb he had cut out of the rock, where no one had ever been laid. ⁵⁴ It was the day of preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning. ⁵⁵ The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph, and they saw the tomb, and how his body was laid there. ⁵⁶ Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. On the Sabbath they rested as commanded.
