Australian selectors surprised everyone by ignoring Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Steve Smith for the upcoming T20 series in Bangladesh, sparking retirement talks.

Recently, Cricket Australia announced the new squad for the upcoming three-match T20 series against Bangladesh, in which Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Steve Smith have been left out. This raised the question whether the career of this trio in T20Is is over.

Australia has dropped Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Steve Smith from the T20 team.

Apart from Maxwell, Stoinis and Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were also not selected for the tour of Pakistan or Bangladesh. But it is being said that he has been rested due to IPL 2026 commitments and busy Test schedule.

Hence, the absence of Maxwell, Stoinis and Smith attracted massive attention as none of them have retired from T20I cricket. He has been a leading player for Australia. But after Australia’s disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026, the selectors now want to test some young players and build a strong squad for the upcoming big events.

With the Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup in mind, Australia is slowly set to rebuild its T20 squad, but the door is not closed on these players just yet.

    George Bailey clarifies retirement rumors

Now Chairman of Selectors George Bailey has made it clear that it is not time for Stoinis, Maxwell and Smith to retire yet. Bailey pointed out that the senior trio has not been officially removed; Instead, it is simply a phase where the team management wants to give chances to different players and create more depth in the squad.

“It’s not the end of the road. I wouldn’t say it’s been ruled out, but I understand they’re not in the squad. But certainly, given where we are in the T20 cycle and in light of our World Cup result, I think it’s a good opportunity to have a look at some different players,” George Bailey said in an official statement.

He added, “I’m not ignoring the fact that every time we take a team or a squad, the hope and our expectation is that we’ll win and those players will perform. So, I think it’s a really important period of time, for that T20 group to really start developing some different players in different roles. But that doesn’t mean it could be the last we see of those three.”

The fight between Smith, Maxwell and Stoinis continues

Notably, Maxwell is now 37 and has been struggling with consistency recently, but he has shown no signs of retirement and continues to play franchise cricket around the world. Stoinis, who will turn 37 later this year, remains one of the most dangerous T20 all-rounders in franchise cricket.

Smith, on the other hand, has openly shown interest in representing Australia at the Los Angeles Olympics, and he recently impressed in PSL 2026, where he scored 380 runs at a strike rate above 161, including a brilliant century.

Joel Davis gets big praise from George Bailey

While some senior stars missed out, Aaron Hardie has returned to the T20I squad after an excellent PSL 2026 season, and young all-rounder Joel Davis has also earned his chance after impressing in the Big Bash League for the Sydney Sixers.

Bailey signed off by saying, “I think there’s a high level of talent there. It’s starting to pay off through some white-ball performances for New South Wales and the Big Bash this year.”

“He’s also a left-arm spinner, and we’ve talked at length about the importance of that and its development throughout the country, and hopefully we’ll see some of that as well.”
