According to a new report from the usually very reliable Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple is currently working on adding third-party AirPlay options to the upcoming iOS 27, which will be unveiled on June 8.
So far, the only streaming protocol built into iOS at the system level is Apple’s own AirPlay. However, the company will reportedly add third-party options like Google Cast in iOS 27, and let you set these as the default to wirelessly stream stuff from your iPhone to a speaker or TV.
If you’re wondering what’s going on, apparently the EU is “to blame.” Apple will do this only to ensure that it meets the latest requirements of the EU’s Digital Markets Act. And there’s one caveat – it’s unclear whether this will only be available in the EU, or whether Apple will employ third-party casting support worldwide.
This isn’t required, but it may prove easier in the end to maintain just one code database and not multiple. We will have to wait and see what stance the company takes on this.
