techradar AI editor Graham Barlow noted that the GPT-4 family of models, first available to users in 2023, was important for consumer AI overall, calling them “the models that changed everything.” Barlow writes that although the new models may perform better on paper, the retirement of these outgoing models probably won’t be easy for everyone. Some users feel that older models are better suited for certain tasks than newer models, and particularly engaged ChatGPAT fans have been known to form associations with the “personality” of particular models.
For those who are not on a paid ChatGPAT plan, nothing is changing here; The free experience that most users join is already powered by the GPT-5.5 model, the older models that are being discontinued are only available to paid subscribers.
OpenAI o3 will be available to paid ChatGPAT customers until August 26. GPT-4.5 will be available until June 27.
