Being a longtime Hilary Duff fan, I am living for the fact that she is back in the spotlight. I’ve been riding with Duff since then Lizzie McGuire I couldn’t wait to get her new album, Luck…or something else. (Spoiler alert: It’s amazing.) But the thing I was most excited to do was relax and hit play during her recent days. call her daddy Interview with Alex Cooper because I knew it would be next level cool. However, what I didn’t expect was to discover some new haircare favorites via Duff’s hair stylist, barb thompson.
Thompson used a brand-new-to-me product called Surface Hair to create Duff’s effortless waves for the interview, and boy, am I glad she spilled the tea on it. I got the full scoop on Duff’s look, including the brand All-In Leave In Conditioner ($36). I decided to give it a try because it didn’t contain any ingredients that were bad for my hair (ie, silicone or coconut oil), and it didn’t disappoint. It leaves my hair soft, hydrated and frizz-free almost instantly. Keep scrolling for all the details on this miracle product, along with some of the others it uses to create Duff’s cool-girl waves.

All In Leave In Conditioner
To debut Duff’s look, Thompson applied this leave-in to her wet hair to actually set the foundation. “It’s great for shine, heat protection, and detangling,” she explains. “Once the hair was three-quarters dry, I parted with Surface Hair Blowout PrimerA lightweight pre-style spray designed to enhance bounce and lock in style memory. I created a smooth, airy base with a 2.5-inch round brush that still has movement. This type of blow-dry is also an important way to create the right canvas for curling iron work.”
To be honest, I don’t usually try products that work well for straight hair because I have thick, low-porosity, 4A curls that are very special. However, shout out to Surface for not adding coconut oil to it – most brands always include this ingredient, and it can be overly drying for low-porosity hair.
My routine was missing something lightweight (yet hydrating) that helps detangle easily, but this leave-in really is that girl for all of the above. My hair gets tangled a lot and it can be a daunting task to sit there and untangle it when I get out of the shower. This makes it very easy. My hair is instantly smoother, more hydrated, and without frizz or frizz. My entire haircare routine is all about striking a delicate balance. My curls need a lot of hydration, but not just any hydration. It should be light enough that I can use it every day without buildup. I have struggled to find the right leave-in in the past. Many were super hydrating but it caused Very Of extra buildup for me. This leave-in is the perfect middle ground and a great addition to my routine.

If you’re looking to mimic Duff’s waves, this is another important tool you’ll need to get the look. Thompson used it for a little extra heat protection and to add shine before going over with a pair of larger-barreled irons. “First, I used a 1.25-inch curling iron from the back and finished the head with a 1.5-inch iron on the top section,” she says. “For the technique, I made sure to cut all the pieces away from the face, taking a section no larger than the iron I was using at the time. It’s also important to cool the section completely before ironing it. This helps the look last longer!”

The goal here was to create that effortless model-of-duty environment we all know and love. “I really wanted an effortless, cool-girl, relaxed wave with soft twists and fluid, bouncy twists,” says Thompson. “To finish, I had Hilary flip her hair, and I used my fingers to work the iron so the end result was sleek but airy. To add volume and break up the loose waves even more, I worked in a tousled Surface Hair Blowout Texture Spray From roots to mid-shaft, then flip it back up. To help break off the ends, I used Surface Hair Blowout Dry Shampoo Foam To create smooth, attractive textures. Apart from enhancing your style, dry shampoo foam is also lightweight and great for the body. Once we were happy with the overall look, I sealed it Surface Hairs Awaken Finishing Spray To ensure lasting hold while maintaining the curvature of the waves and keeping the hair touchable.”

Curl Moisturizing Shampoo
I haven’t gotten my hands on the brand’s curl-specific line yet, but it’s definitely next on my list. This sulfate-free shampoo provides a low-key (but luxurious) lather that doesn’t leave hair frizzy or dry. It also contains super hydrators like cocoa butter and babassu seed oil to nourish dry textures like mine.

Curl Moisturizing Conditioner
I’m pretty picky about my conditioners, but everything about this curl-friendly formula speaks to me. Along with superstar hydrating ingredients like shea butter, cocoa seed butter, flax seed oil, and jojoba butter, this conditioner also includes amaranth protein. This protein is rich in essential amino acids and keeps your hair from becoming dull and dry over time.
