For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
I Peter 2:25
return to the shepherd
From time to time, the Bible calls us “sheep.” That’s not very good, is it? If a wolf is bearing down, how can a lone sheep protect itself? The score each time is: Wolf 1, Sheep 0. If there is a drought, where will the sheep find good water and grass? And the worst part? If a sheep wanders into real but invisible danger, they have no way of escaping it.
How damning to hear the Apostle Peter say, “You were like sheep going astray.” Maybe you thought you could handle a little temptation on the computer. Or you thought you could just drink once and then drive. Or, you thought you deserved the right to be angry at so-and-so. The threat became very real, very fast.
It’s time to return to the shepherd. no more excuses. You won’t have to wander anymore. There is no longer any need to think that you can look temptation in the eye and handle it all alone. Now there is no need to think that you can solve all your problems. No longer is there any need to be tricked into thinking you are in control when you are not. Return to the Shepherd! Let him be your supervisor. Let His promises guide you. Listen to Him when He says to you, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). There you are safe for eternity.
Prayer:
Dear Shepherd, I do not want to stray from you. Please keep an eye on me so that I may never go astray and remain safe under Your promises. Amen.
