Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon became the first player to reach 50 goals this season by scoring in the opening period against the Vancouver Canucks.
MacKinnon found space in the slot and fired a wrist shot past goaltender Kevin Lankinen for the milestone. This is the second time in his career that he has scored at least 50 goals, following a 51-goal campaign from 2023 to 2024.
The goal was also his 121st point of the season, tying him for second place in the NHL scoring race with Nikita Kucherov. Connor McDavid remains at the top of the league with 125 points.
MacKinnon now leads Cole Caulfield by three goals in the race for the scoring title.
Despite the individual milestones, Colorado suffered an 8–6 loss, their second loss in seven games. MacKinnon finished the night with a goal and seven shots on net.
Vancouver’s Brock Boeser led the way for the Canucks, recording three goals and one assist in the high-scoring contest.
The Avalanche remain on top of the standings with a 49–14–10 record, but the result highlights defensive concerns as they approach the playoffs.
