“This extremely sensitive matter must be properly investigated with full transparency and accountability,” Pelosi said in a statement. “As I discussed with Congressman Swalwell, it is clear that this is best done outside of the gubernatorial campaign.”
In a joint statement with other elected House Democratic leaders, Jeffries called for a “swift investigation” as well as an end to his pending campaign.
“This is unacceptable for anyone – certainly not for any elected official – and should be taken seriously,” the leaders said.

“These allegations are false and have been made on the eve of elections against the front-runner in the race for the post of governor,” he said. “I will defend myself with the facts and take legal action where necessary.”
Prominent supporters of Swalwell’s gubernatorial bid swiftly withdrew their endorsements after the Chronicle’s story was published, including Representatives Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) and Adam Gray (D-Calif.), who served as co-chairs of the campaign.
“Today’s reports about Eric Swalwell’s conduct while in office are deeply troubling,” Gray said in a statement. “Harassment, abuse, and violence of any kind is unacceptable. Given these serious allegations, I am withdrawing my endorsement and Eric Swalwell should end his campaign immediately.”
But Pelosi’s statement did not spell out the threat to Swalwell’s nearly two-decade political career as clearly as it did. The former speaker added Swalwell to his inner circle of favored Democratic members over the years, tapping him for junior leadership roles and serving as a manager in Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial in 2021.
The situation presents a difficult situation for current House Democratic leaders, who have insisted on allowing a full Ethics Committee investigation before supporting formal discipline against another House Democrat accused of misconduct, Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.).
Jeffries, Minority Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts and Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar of California did not speak directly about the results in the House in a joint statement.
But according to three people who agreed to remain anonymous to describe private conversations, House Republicans by Friday evening were already discussing the possible scenario that one of their own members would pursue an censure effort against Swalwell.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) said in an interview that she was considering censure and other action against Swalwell based on reports of sexual harassment allegations against him.
Luna said that “if any evidence is brought forward she will take action.”
Internal results may begin to emerge as soon as the House returns to session on Tuesday, but a wave of top California Democrats immediately dropped their support for Swalwell, including Representative Ted Lieu, the No. 4 Democrat in the House leadership.
Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) compared the situation to his effort for transparency in the case of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein and called for “proper” House and law enforcement investigations.
“No one in a position of power should be allowed to act above the law or with impunity,” he said in a statement. “It doesn’t matter what office you hold, how rich you are, or what political party you are affiliated with. The same rules should apply to Eric Swalwell.”
