The French evangelical alliance CNEF (Conseil National des Évangéliques de France) has issued a rallying cry to evangelicals to mobilise a “spirit of compassion, prayer and support” to communities suffering after devastating wildfires engulfed large areas of France this summer.

France is facing a historic wildfire crisis, with more than 115,000 hectares burned nationwide and at least 220,000 people evacuated, particularly in high-risk areas of the southwest, including Gironde. Emergency crews have temporarily brought a major wildfire west of Bordeaux under control, but temperatures above 40°C and strong winds continue to pose a serious risk of further outbreaks

The country has activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to mobilize European firefighting support, and local authorities have restricted forest access and urged tourists to avoid affected Atlantic coast destinations.

The CNEF shared both prayer points and opportunities for solidarity at this time.

“As the extent of the damage caused by the fires of recent days increases, we pray to our God, convinced that he intervenes in these dramatic situations, and that he can bring his peace to those affected, and act miraculously to stop the human and material damage,” said CNEF

The evangelical group called for prayer for the thousands displaced; for those who have lost homes, jobs and possessions; and for firefighters and authorities dealing with the fires. Prayers are also requested for families of deceased firefighters.

“Let us thank God together for the dedication of the firefighters, rescue workers, and all those mobilized in the fight against the fire and in supporting the victims,” said CNEF.

“Let us thank God for the many Christians involved in firefighting efforts, who also share the hope they have in Christ.”

Prayers are sought for the weather to be more favorable and see an end to heatwave conditions so that the fires can finally be extinguished.

“Let us pray together to God that he will intervene miraculously and that these fires will be stopped,” said CNEF.  “Let us pray together that everyone may find salvation, hope, and comfort through the Gospel. Concrete solidarity in support of the victims.”

It continued, “We encourage evangelical Protestants to participate in this solidarity movement, particularly through local churches and associations active on the ground

“These great fires remind us how all creation groans and suffers in longing for its redemption (Romans 8). In the meantime, as the Bible invites us, let us persevere in interceding for the world around us.”
