Six Planets Before Dawn
Six planets will be scattered across the morning sky before dawn. Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune are among them.Under the right conditions, Mercury, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn can be viewed without special equipment. Uranus generally needs binoculars, and Neptune would usually need a telescope and a good sky guide.Mercury and Jupiter will be low near the eastern horizon. They may be hard to find due to buildings, trees, clouds and morning light. The precise visibility of each planet will depend on the observer’s location and local sunrise time.
Total Solar Eclipse of August 12, 2026
Later that day, the Moon will pass directly between the Earth and the Sun. If you are standing inside the narrow path of the Moon’s central shadow, you will see a total solar eclipse.The path of totality will cross northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain and a small corner of Portugal. A partial eclipse will be seen in much of the rest of Europe, Canada, the northern United States and north-western Africa.During totality, the bright face of the Sun will be totally obscured by the Moon. The solar corona, normally hidden by the glare of sunlight, will become briefly visible.Most places inside the path will have less than two minutes of totality. Places near the centre of the eclipse path might receive a few additional seconds of darkness, but even then the maximum will be less than two and a half minutes.One of the most striking views will be of Spain. In cities like León, Valencia and Zaragoza, totality will occur just before sunset. That could lead to the strange sight of an eclipsed Sun lingering low on the western horizon.
Will India see the solar eclipse?
The Solar Eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026 on the Amavasya tithi (New Moon day) of the Sawan month. According to Indian time (IST), the eclipse will begin at 9:04 PM on the night of 12 August and will end at 4:25 AM on the morning of 13 August. This solar eclipse will not be visible in India. Therefore, its Sutak Kaal (eclipsed period observances) will not be applicable in India.Depending on clouds, local light pollution and horizon conditions, some of the morning planets may still be visible to Indian viewers and the Perseid meteor shower can be watched.

Next up after the eclipse is the big Perseid meteor shower; its maximum is expected on the night of 12 August and the early hours of 13 August 2026.The shower continues from July 17 to August 24. Strong meteor activity may be recorded in ideal locations during its peak. The actual numbers will depend on darkness, weather, light pollution and the radiant’s position.
Rules for India-Based Devotees
People in India can continue with their normal schedule. Daily puja, office work, business activity, travel and cooking can be done as normal. At home, Sutak does not mean not to eat or close the temple.But those who want to celebrate this day spiritually can keep a calm mind, chant the Surya mantra, read religious scriptures and give charity. These practices are voluntary and based on individual convictions.
What Not to Do During Solar Eclipse
If you’re in an area where the eclipse is visible, don’t look at the Sun with your naked eyes. Use certified solar viewing glasses or appropriate solar filters. Normal sunglasses are not good for watching eclipses.Do not observe through telescopes, binoculars, or mobile cameras without a proper solar filter. This can lead to eye damage or equipment damage.It is customary to refrain from eating, sleeping, initiating important tasks and performing auspicious rituals during a visible eclipse. Family tradition often counsels pregnant women, children, the aged, and the sick to exercise more caution.No restrictions are needed as Sutak is not observed in India.
