A powerful winter storm is set to hit parts of California and Nevada in a severe warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) as temperatures continue to drop and winds are expected to reach dangerous speeds.
The NWS placed Yosemite, the Upper San Joaquin River, Kaiser to Rogers Ridge, Kings Canyon NP and Sequoia NP under a winter storm warning at 12:38 a.m. Tuesday. The warning has now been extended to Wednesday, April 22.
As a result of the coming harsh winter storm, states will face up to 5 inches of snow levels above 7,000 feet at the highest points of the Sierra Nevada. Additionally, winds in these high-altitude mountainous areas are expected to reach 75 mph.
“A total of 3 to 5 inches of snow accumulation is expected above 7,000 feet, with 12 to 18 inches possible at the highest elevations of the Sierra Nevada. Wind gusts up to 75 mph are expected at the Sierra summit,” the NWS reported.
The NWS also warned that the volatile winter storm is creating dangerous conditions for travelers as residents of affected counties are advised not to travel unnecessarily due to the cold temperatures and slippery road conditions.
“Travel may be very difficult to impossible. Hazardous conditions may impact travel Tuesday morning and evening. Strong winds may damage trees,” the NWS said.
If traveling is really important, be sure to keep food, water, and an extra flashlight in your vehicle for emergencies. “The latest road conditions information for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 511.”
