It’s rare that a simple item like a cotton shirt makes as much of an impact on the runway as shoes, handbags or outerwear. Typically, a piece like this gets forgotten about – long used as a layering tool rather than a garment worth talking about. However, that’s exactly what happened at Matthew Blazey’s first show for the channel last October. To the naked eye, the top of Look 13 was just a shirt, but when you look closer, it became much more than that. The shirt – a crisp, white tuxedo-style button-down – was the first item of clothing that Gabrielle Chanel borrowed from menswear, in the French fashion house’s catalogue. Product Description For viral items. Blazy teamed up with heritage French shirtmaker Charvet to create it, adding Chanel’s signature chain, pearl-button details and the brand’s name in light red in the process. On Nicole Kidman: Chanel shirts, jeans, shoes and bags; omega watch
The funny thing is that for the first time we saw Chanel’s tuxedo shirt was not When Blazey’s first collection was unveiled on the runway – it was just minutes before the brand’s then-latest ambassador, Nicole Kidman, arrived wearing one of her own pieces for the show at The Grand Palace in Paris. In her effortless way, she styled the untucked shirt with rolled-up sleeves and perfectly matched her quilted flap bag with red “Chanel” embroidery on the front. With Chanel’s version of the tuxedo shirt finally arriving in US stores last week (and appearing in the window display of the 57th Street store in New York City), the shirt style has taken over the top spot in fashion from the standard poplin button-down shirt overnight. Suddenly, they no longer feel interesting enough, sending all their acquaintances on a hunt to secure at least one tuxedo shirt (out of five) before spring officially arrives. The unexpected way she was styled at Polo Ralph Lauren’s F/W 26 presentation during Paris Fashion Week has only added to the craze.
