(meaningful news) – President Donald Trump launched an anti-fraud task force on Monday, and appointed Vice President J.D. Vance to lead it.
Trump signed an executive order naming Vance to head the anti-fraud task force, along with Federal Trade Commission head Andrew Ferguson.
White House homeland security adviser Stephen Miller estimated that the task force could return billions of dollars to American taxpayers.
Trump pointed to claims of fraud in Minnesota, estimating that $19 billion was taken from federal programs across the state. He said Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar may have been involved in fraud.
“If we could find half the fraud going on in this country, and I think you have a chance to do that, we would have much more than a balanced budget,” Trump said.
Vance said the fraud in Minnesota stemmed from families who falsely claimed their children had autism in order to receive federal benefits for care. The task force announcement comes after Vance blocked $259 million in Medicaid funds for Minnesota.
“You had autistic kids in suburban Minneapolis who were not getting the benefits they needed because Somali fraudsters were literally stealing from their pockets,” Vance said. “It has to stop. Unfortunately, that kind of fraud is just one example of possibly hundreds within the state of Minneapolis.”
Trump said the administration has found that large-scale fraud is more likely to occur in states with Democrat leaders. He pointed to the examples of New York, California and Illinois where fraud may also be prevalent.
He said fraud in California is “10 times worse” than Minnesota and other states with fraud concerns.
Trump said the fraud in California was caused by an overabundance of illegal immigration.
“The kind of money we’re talking about is changing the country,” Trump said. “It’s just short of being a really profitable country where you can reduce your taxes substantially for people.”
