A new iPhone hack tool called DarkSword has raised concerns among cyber security experts, as it enables cyber criminals to take control of iPhone devices without the owner’s knowledge by visiting an infected website. Google researchers, in collaboration with cybersecurity companies iVerify and Lookout, have revealed the hack that has the potential to compromise millions of iPhone users around the world, as an older version of the iPhone software, iOS 18, remains in effect.
iPhone hacks infect iPhone devices using outdated versions of iPhone software, allowing cyber criminals to steal personal data including messages, photos, passwords, and even cryptocurrency wallet data in a matter of minutes.
How does DarkSword iPhone hack work?
Unlike traditional spyware, DarkSword uses a “fileless” approach. Instead of installing malicious software, it hijacks normal system processes, making it harder to detect. The attack does not continue after a reboot, but it can quickly extract sensitive data in a “smash-and-grab” operation.
According to iVerify CEO Rocky Cole, a large number of users remain vulnerable. He said that visiting a compromised website with this tool could expose users’ information. Researchers found the tool’s code publicly accessible, making it easy for other hackers to use it.
The hacking tool has already been linked to several cyber attacks on users in different countries, including Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. It has also been linked to espionage campaigns conducted by Russian-speaking hackers.
Experts say the development of such equipment points to a growing demand for sophisticated cyber weapons that were previously reserved for targeted operations.
Apple said that they have released several updates to help users protect themselves from hacking tools.
