Ryan Gosling has revealed the most unusual co-star he’s ever had.
in an interview with people magazine, project hail mary The star revealed that working with Rocky, the five-limbed, spider-like alien, was not very easy.
“I don’t like calling them puppets, but they’re calling them puppets,” he said.
“Well, she’s a diva, to be honest. Very high-maintenance. She has her own glamor team,” Ryan characterized Rocky.
Unlike many modern films, Rocky was not just a CGI creation. Instead, the character was brought to life through a complex combination of puppetry and animatronics, operated by a team of five puppeteers dressed in black. Voice actor James Ortiz eventually became the definitive voice of the alien, initially stepping in to help Ryan Gosling rehearse scenes.
The Barbie actor said, “James Ortiz was only supposed to create the puppets and we were supposed to figure out Rocky’s voice later. But James started making up the lines for me so I would have someone to read the lines to, so I wasn’t just imagining the dialogue.”
The puppeteer “understood Rocky so deeply that he got to the point where he knew what Rocky would say, what he wouldn’t say, what he would do.”
Ryan said, “James was Rocky and James is Rocky now and you can’t imagine it any other way.”
Additionally, adding a personal touch to the production, Ryan Gosling also revealed that his daughters helped voice Rocky during filming, feeding him lines through an earpiece.
