Jay-Z has given an opinion on the most explosive battle in rap history between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, and it’s not what fans would expect.
In a long interview with gq magazineHe blamed social media for making the beef cross a line where family is involved.
“Now, people like Kendrick hate Drake no matter what he does. It’s like an attack on his character. I don’t know if I like it or not,” he shares.
Pointing to social media, Jay-Z says, “I don’t know if it’s helpful to our development or not, especially the impact social media has. It’s too far. It’s bringing people’s kids into it. I don’t like it.”
The Grammy winner has compared the old rap beef to the new rap beef, which he says has turned toxic due to fans choosing hard sides on social media and declaring it a war.
“I sound like an old man wagging his finger, but I think we can accomplish the same thing, as far as tinkering with music, with collaboration instead of tearing the whole thing apart. I could afford it earlier because there was no social media.”
The divisiveness social media has spread so deeply that Jay-Z admits he questions whether it’s worth it anymore.
“You struggled and it was fun and then you moved on. Right now, I don’t know if it can survive with the technology we have. It’s like trying to ruin people’s lives. I don’t know if it’s worth it at this point.”
Drake and Lamar’s rap battle has been linked to pop culture, becoming a lightning rod for their respective fans.
