(Worthy News) – Israel has launched a rare and far-reaching military attack on Iran’s Caspian Sea port of Bandar Anzali, targeting a logistics hub used by Russia and Iran to transport weapons, according to the Wall Street Journal.
It was Israel’s first attack on the Caspian Sea, which officials described as a vital supply route used to move ammunition, martyred drones and other military equipment between the two countries. The inland sea serves as a strategic corridor connecting Russian and Iranian ports, some 600 miles apart, beyond the operational reach of the US Navy.
Israeli forces reportedly attacked dozens of targets at the port, including naval ships, a command center, and shipyard facilities used to maintain military assets. Verified footage shows significant damage to Iran’s naval headquarters and the destruction of several ships, although the full extent is unclear.
Military analysts say the operation was designed not only to degrade Iran’s capabilities but also to disrupt the growing alliance between Moscow and Tehran. Russia has increasingly relied on Iranian drones in its war in Ukraine, while also providing Tehran with satellite intelligence and advanced drone technology for use against US assets and regional targets.
Former Israeli Navy commander Eliezer Marum said, “The most important goals of this attack were to limit Russian smuggling and to demonstrate Iran’s vulnerability in the Caspian.”
The Caspian Corridor has played a central role in sustaining Russia’s war efforts. Previous reports indicate that hundreds of thousands of artillery shells and over a million rounds of ammunition were transported from Iran to Russia via this route. The ships often escaped detection by disabling transponders, complicating Western efforts to monitor the transfers.
The strike could also have broader economic implications. Disruption of military shipments linking them with civilian trade, including grain and energy supplies, could put additional pressure on Iran’s domestic stability. Analysts suggest that the move signals Israel’s ability to target not only military infrastructure but also pressure points that affect Iran’s internal resilience.
Russia condemned the attack, warned against further escalation in the Caspian region and emphasized the port’s role in civilian trade. Despite the warnings, Israel appears to have expanded its operational reach, indicating a willingness to confront Iranian supply networks even in geographically sensitive areas.
Experts warned that although the strike is significant, Iran and Russia could restart their operations through alternative ports, limiting long-term disruption. Still, in the short term, a shock to drone supply chains and logistics could impact ongoing military operations in multiple theaters.
