Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them; Because they don’t know what they do. And they divided his clothes and cast lots. Luke 23:34
Jesus did not answer all this in even a single word. Even while the nails were being driven into His hands, and the drops of sweat of suffering were thick on His forehead, He prayed a prayer of forgiving love for His murderers: ‘Father, forgive them; Because they don’t know what they do.’
Oh, was there ever such suffering and sorrow as that which the dying Savior endured! But it was not physical suffering, it was his sense of separation from God that made his cup so bitter. It was not physical pain that ended the life of Jesus Christ so quickly on the cross. It was the heavy burden of the sins of the world that broke his heart. The glory and abiding presence of the Father had left him; It was this that brought from his lips this anguished cry, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’
