A man has been arrested after a car struck “several pedestrians” in Derby city centre, police have said.
Several people were injured, some of them seriously, and were treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.
Police stopped a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident shortly after the incident, which happened in Friar Gate at around 9.30pm on Saturday night.
The driver, a man aged around 30, was arrested and is in police custody.
Derbyshire Police said: “Our investigation is still in the early stages, but we are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the man driving the black Suzuki Swift in Derby at the time of the incident.
“Friar Gate is completely closed from the junction with Curzon Street/Cheapside to Ford Street. The road will remain closed for a significant period of time so please avoid the area completely.
“While we know this will be worrying, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is any risk to the public.
“No further information is available at this stage, but we will post an update as soon as we have it.”
