(Worthy News) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that he has directed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to expand their security buffer inside southern Lebanon, signaling a significant escalation in Israel’s northern campaign against Iran-backed terrorist group Hezbollah.
Speaking from the IDF Northern Command headquarters in Safed, Netanyahu said the move was designed to “ultimately thwart the threat of invasion” and divert anti-tank missile fire from Israeli communities that have endured sustained attacks in recent weeks.
Israel previously maintained a buffer zone in southern Lebanon until 2000, working with the now defunct South Lebanon Army. Following Israel’s withdrawal, Hezbollah rapidly became one of the most heavily armed non-state forces in the world, amassing a vast arsenal of rockets and missiles.
Netanyahu declared that Israel had already dealt a major blow to that threat, pointing to the ouster of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and the destruction of large portions of the group’s missile stockpile.
“Those who wanted to destroy us have been struck,” Netanyahu said. “But Hezbollah still retains residual capabilities and we are committed to eliminating that threat as well.”
three layer security detail
According to Israeli military officials, the expanded operation involves a multi-layered defense strategy inside Lebanon. These lines extend from border villages used for infiltration attempts to areas capable of launching anti-tank missiles and to the Litani River – long seen by Israeli planners as a strategic border to limit Hezbollah’s reach.
Recent advances by the IDF’s 146th Division have pushed Israeli forces deeper into southern Lebanon, including key positions near the coastal area south of Tyre. Israeli officials say that these areas have been used by Hezbollah to carry out attacks.
The military also reported several successful operations targeting Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure, including drone strikes on armed operatives, destroying missile launchers, and seizing anti-tank missiles and weapons caches containing explosives.
Multi-front warfare is reshaping the field
Netanyahu framed the Lebanon expansion as part of a broader regional campaign against Iran and its proxy networks, declaring that Israel was no longer reacting defensively but seizing the initiative.
“We are the side that is taking action, we are the side that is attacking, we are the side that has the initiative – and we are deep inside their zone,” he said.
He stressed that Israel’s operations have weakened not only Hezbollah but also Hamas and Iran, claiming there are now “visible cracks” in Tehran’s leadership.
The conflict intensified after Hezbollah joined the war against Israel on October 7, 2023, after Hamas launched sustained rocket and drone attacks from Lebanon. While many of those attacks now target Israeli forces operating inside Lebanon, the threat to northern Israeli communities remains.
rising costs of war
The price of war has to be paid. Israeli officials have reported civilian casualties from rocket attacks as well as the deaths of five soldiers in the Lebanon campaign. Meanwhile, Lebanon’s health ministry claims more than 1,200 people have been killed in Israeli strikes, although it does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.
Despite the losses, Netanyahu stressed that Israel’s new security doctrine – focused on forward defense and preemptive action – has already reshaped the strategic landscape.
“We said we would change the face of the Middle East,” he said. “and we have.”
Apocalyptic Perspective: Could Developments in Lebanon Signal the Season of the “Last Rain”?
As Israel has hinted at the possibility of expanding its control into southern Lebanon, some prophetic watchers are watching carefully to see what such a move would portend – not only geopolitically, but also spiritually.
The scriptures speak of a future season of heavy rain, often referred to as the “last rain” or Malakosh. In Zechariah 10:1, the prophet calls on God’s people to pray to the Lord for rain during the time of the latter rain, pointing to a divinely appointed moment when God will pour out His Spirit in preparation for a great harvest.
In the same apocalyptic context, Zechariah describes the reunion of the Jewish people:
“I will whistle and gather them…I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon, so that there will be no more room for them” (Zechariah 10:8-10).
This passage is surprising, because it specifically mentions not only Israel, but also Lebanon and Gilead as part of the overflow of restoration. The imagination is one of abundance – so many people are returning that the land itself struggles to accommodate them.
Another prophetic reference appears in Obadiah 1:20, which declares:
“The captives of this army of Israelites will take possession of the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath.”
Zerefath is historically identified with the Lebanese coast, between Sidon and Tyre—modern Lebanon. This suggests a future expansion of habitation or influence associated with Israel’s restoration.
Overall, these passages point to a sequence: re-gathering, expansion, and finally the establishment of the kingdom under the authority of the Lord.
It remains to be seen whether current military developments directly match these predictions. However, the unification of Israel, Lebanon, and increasing global tensions are attracting renewed attention from those who study prophetic texts.
For many people, the main solution is not only territorial, but also spiritual. The same passages that speak of the gathering again also point to the outpouring of God’s Spirit. If the season of Malakosh is indeed coming, it will signal not only conflict in the region, but also the beginning of a global harvest unlike anything seen before.
In that light, events in the Middle East can serve as both a warning and an invitation – calling hearts to prepare for what many believe could be a critical moment in the history of salvation.
