(Worthy News) – Italy last week refused to allow US military aircraft to land at Sigonella airport in Sicily before proceeding to the Middle East, highlighting growing sensitivities among European allies over the ongoing conflict with Iran, according to cited sources on Tuesday.
The decision, first reported by Italian daily Corriere Della Sera and confirmed to Reuters by sources familiar with the matter, was based on Washington’s failure to obtain prior authorization from Rome. Under existing agreements governing US military installations in Italy, such clearance is required before operations can proceed.
Sources indicated that several American bombers were scheduled to land at a strategic base in eastern Sicily, but Italy denied permission on 27 March after proper procedures were not followed. Officials stressed that all requests involving military facilities are reviewed on a case-by-case basis in accordance with national policy and international agreements.
In a statement, the Italian government stressed that relations with the United States would remain “strong and based on full and loyal cooperation”, while reiterating its commitment to parliamentary oversight of any involvement linked to the war effort.
The move comes amid broader tensions within NATO, as some European countries distanced themselves from US and Israeli military actions against Iran. Pedro Sánchez has been one of the most vocal critics, with Spain recently closing its airspace to US aircraft involved in the conflict.
In contrast, Giorgia Meloni has maintained close relations with Donald Trump and avoided direct opposition to the campaign, although domestic pressure is mounting. Opposition leaders in Italy called the denial of landing rights a reasonable step, and urged the government to oppose deeper involvement in the war.
As the conflict reshapes alliances and tests diplomatic cohesion, the situation underscores the delicate balance European countries face between strategic partnerships and domestic political realities.
