Pakistan international Fakhar Zaman has been banned for two matches after being found guilty of ball tampering during the country’s showpiece T20 cricket league.
“Zaman has been suspended for two matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) after being found guilty of a Level 3 offense of ball tampering,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement on Tuesday.
The 35-year-old opening batsman was seen changing the position of the ball in video footage during his team Lahore Qalandars’ match against Karachi Kings in Lahore on Sunday night.
The PCB charged Zaman in a disciplinary hearing with Sri Lankan match referee Roshan Mahanama, who denied ball tampering.
Mahanama watched television footage which showed Qalandars players Zaman, captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf and umpire Faisal Afridi inspecting the condition of the ball.
The umpire awarded five penalty runs against the Qalandars, who lost the match by four wickets.
Shaheen was also fined $3,500 for breaking the tournament’s strict safety protocols.
The PSL is taking place behind closed doors without fans and at only two venues instead of six due to fuel supply concerns due to the Iran war.
Afridi was fined by Qalandars for breaching security protocols at his team hotel in Lahore, one of the two host cities along with Karachi for this year’s tournament.
Punjab Police said Afridi was refused permission to take visitors to the room of his partner Sikandar Raza, but he did so anyway.
Earlier, fast bowler Naseem Shah was imposed the biggest fine in Pakistan cricket history after criticizing a politician on social media.
