(Worthy News) – Pentagon Fort Leslie J. McNair is considering deploying a high-energy counter-drone laser system in Washington, D.C., a sign of growing concern over unexplained drone activity near sensitive U.S. government sites.
The possible deployment comes after multiple drone sightings near the facility that houses senior officials including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, The New York Times reports.
US Army officials have confirmed increased vigilance in the area. Heather Chairez, spokeswoman for Joint Task Force-National Capital Region, said officials are aware of the drone sightings and have expanded anti-drone measures, although no credible threat has been identified.
However, the proposed deployment raises significant security questions. Fort McNair sits within tightly controlled airspace near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, where any use of high-energy systems must be carefully coordinated to avoid risk to civilian aircraft.
Recent events have highlighted the challenges of implementing such technology. In one case, a laser system targeted a drone near Fort Hancock, Texas, which was later identified as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection drone. In another, a suspected aerial threat near Fort Bliss – which later turned out to be a party balloon – led to the temporary closure of a nearby airfield.
To address these concerns, the Pentagon has partnered with the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct testing in New Mexico, evaluating how laser systems interact with aircraft materials and ensuring safety measures.
FAA officials stressed the importance of maintaining aviation security while responding to emerging threats, noting ongoing coordination with defense agencies.
The discussions come as the number of drone sightings over major US cities and military installations has increased over the past year, raising new concerns about homeland security and the evolving nature of aerial threats.
