Goaltender Jacob Dobbs made 36 saves for Montreal, while Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 19 shots.
The result shows Montreal moving up to second place in the division, within two points of the Lightning, while four points behind the leaders.
For Tampa Bay, the loss ended an eight-game losing streak and dropped them further back in the race for the top spot.
