But he answered, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4
Christ was familiar with the Scriptures, for He faced all the temptations of the devil by saying ‘It is written’. Logic and reason are of no use, but ‘it is written’ shows that Jesus Christ, who was tempted, had set his feet on solid, immovable rock. We are to learn these lessons from the Word, hang them up in the chamber of memory, and thus prepare to meet the devil with the only weapon that will repulse him – ‘It is written.’ Everything written in the Law and the Prophets is true, and they contain proof of it in themselves.
Nothing is achieved by attempting to prove the divine origin of the Bible through logic. It is an exponent of itself. It has its own keys; The scripture opens the lock of the scripture. If we do not see the truth in the Bible, it is because our opinions and prejudices have not been held at the door of scrutiny. ‘If our gospel is hidden, it is hidden from those who are lost: The god of this world has blinded the minds of those who do not believe, so that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should not shine to them’ (2 Corinthians 4:3, 4). ‘For preaching the cross is foolishness to those who destroy; But to us who are saved it is the power of God’ (1 Corinthians 1:18).
