The idea of a European edition of the Asia Cup has suffered a crushing blow. There are expectations that England, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands and even Italy will take part in the brand new Euro Nations Cup in 2027. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has made it clear that England will not be a part of the proposed tournament.
Cricket Ireland Chairman Brian McNeice was very enthusiastic about the proposed Euro Nations Cup. McNeice hoped to create a continental event involving both men and women in the T20 format, similar to the popular Asia Cup format.
England refused to participate in Euro Nations Cup due to busy schedule
But the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has ruled out every possibility of the England team participating in the Euro Nations Cup. ECB CEO Richard Gould confirmed his decision during the launch of the domestic season at Lord’s.

Gould admitted that the idea sounded fresh and interesting, but England’s international schedule was already full; This makes it difficult to add another event to the calendar.
“It’s a great idea. Our schedule is absolutely packed, and we’re not thinking of adding anything else to our schedule,” Richard Gould said at the time of the launch, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
England’s 2026 home season alone is packed with series against New Zealand, Pakistan, India, Ireland and Sri Lanka. Along with this, England will also host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup next year.
With such a tight schedule and long tours, the ECB believes that teams cannot take on additional commitments without impacting players’ workload and performance.
Why is Cricket Ireland pushing for Euro Nations Cup?
Earlier, Brian McNeice had said that the Euro Nations Cup had been under discussion for a long time and he felt more confident than ever about the idea becoming a reality. But without England, broadcasters cannot show keen interest.
Ireland and England are actively playing against each other. Both the cricket boards have also agreed to play a three-match T20I series in 2029. Cricket Ireland is hopeful that the upcoming new stadium in Abbotstown, Dublin will be ready to host those T20I matches against England.
The proposed Euro Nations Cup is part of Ireland’s larger mission to strengthen its international structure. They want more regular fixtures for both men’s and women’s teams to increase visibility in European cricket.
ECB reacts to criticism of England team environment
Meanwhile, Richard Gould also reacted strongly to the discussion about the negative atmosphere in the England men’s team. The controversy erupted after some players who were recently dropped from the team publicly shared their disappointment. He dismissed the claims and said that the start of a new season always brings energy and positivity.
The ECB CEO further explained, “I don’t really agree. The start of a new season is always an exciting turn… All our metrics are good and positive. Yes, we have had a difficult winter, but it is a tough road that we will overcome.”
He also said that players often feel emotional and upset when they are dropped from the national team. “When players come out of England, it’s tough for them… these are competitive men and women who want to play at the highest level for as long as they can,” Gould said.
